GPA Calculator Formula / How It Works

This tool runs local browser-based JavaScript to compute GPAs. In Semester mode, it converts letter grades to numeric values using standard 4.0 weights, adds course bonuses if weighted is enabled (capped at 5.0 per course), multiplies each value by credit hours, and divides by total credits. In Cumulative mode, it combines weighted products of past and present semesters.

Formula:Semester GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) / Σ(Credits); Cumulative GPA = (Current GPA × Current Credits + Semester GPA × Semester Credits) / Total Credits
Example Calculation:

For example, if you take a 3-credit AP course (A grade = 5.0 weighted points) and a 3-credit Regular course (B grade = 3.0 points), your weighted semester GPA is: (5.0 × 3 + 3.0 × 3) / 6 = 4.00.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unweighted GPA is calculated on a standard 4.0 scale regardless of class difficulty. Weighted GPA grants bonus points for advanced courses (+0.5 for Honors, +1.0 for AP/IB) to reflect academic rigor, capped at 5.0.

Cumulative GPA combines all semesters by multiplying your current cumulative GPA by past credits, adding your new semester's GPA multiplied by new credits, and dividing by total cumulative credits.

Yes! Use the collapsible Customize Scale panel to edit the point values of each letter grade to match your school's grading guidelines.

On the standard 4.0 scale, A+ and A are both worth 4.0 grade points. However, you can use the Customize Scale panel to increase A+ to 4.3 if your school uses an expanded scale.

Our GPA Calculator fully supports decimal credits (e.g., 0.5 or 1.5 credits). The calculations are weighted proportionally by the credit value of each course.
